The Story

Hello, I am Kerrie Mariah
I blend my passion for software development with a nomadic lifestyle, writing about my experiences while exploring the world. What started as a remote job experiment turned into a life-changing journey across continents, from trekking the Himalayas to studying Mandarin in Yangshuo.
When I am not crafting code or debugging in exotic locations, you might find me recovering from a coral cut in the Philippines, conducting coffee acidity experiments, or organizing writing groups from my houseboat in Hong Kong. My adventures—both digital and physical—fuel my creativity and problem-solving approach to life.

Manaslu Trek - Final Push Through Larke Pass
"Yesterday, we woke up at 3am to a warm enough tent though the wind howled, and the outer tent was frozen hard over. Thankfully, we had kept our boots inside, otherwise they'd certainly have frozen over and putting our feet into frozen blocks would've lowered our already low mood. My nerves had me up at 2am and I could feel the gurgle in my belly which foretold my doom."
"Step after painful step, we made it to the top of the pass where hugs from the rest of the group reduced me to the tears that had been threatening for a while. I tried my best to recover at our 5,100m (16,700ft) but each breath was a struggle in that hostile yet beautiful environment."

Subconscious Gender Bias in Non-Native Mandarin Speakers
For those of you not familiar with Mandarin, the spoken sound of he and she sound identical though they are written differently. Especially in today's day and age, I was a bit shocked with how quickly I had subconsciously jumped to gendering the neutral-sounding pronoun based on contextual clues without even realising it.
